Anthony, VT Bishop Ford (CHS) Canton, MA Preview of Races The views expressed in this section do not represent the Guilderland XC Team...it is merely for entertainment. -Webmaster Girls Varsity Small School Race Returning champion Broadalbin-Perth looks like they're back to their winning ways this season after a strong performance at last weekend's Fonda Invitational. The Lady Patriots put four runners in the top ten and just narrowly missed defeating the Scotia-Glenville ladies this past Tuesday. Regardless, look for B-P's Alex Kuhl to lead the way, and be in the chase for an individual title. The chase for individual champion could be one of the most hotly contested races of the day! Leading local candidate for the individual crown is Ada Lauterbach of Berne-Knox-Westerlo. Lauterbach won her race at the Fonda Invitational last weekend. Mary Kate Champagne of Seton Catholic (at left) is the reigning Classs D State XC Champion and will pose a serious threat to anyone who gets in her way. Champagne is supported by a strong cast of runners, and we select Seton Catholic as our dark horse to win the team title. Boys Varsity Small School Race The Ichabod Crane Boys team is our leading pick for this year's race. The Riders fared well against steep competition at last weekend's Shaker Invitational and took their first two dual meet wins against Berlin and Chatham this past Tuesday. Look for Josh Jennings to be in the hunt for the individual crown after a 9th place finish last year. Another tough team will be the Cobleskill-Richmond boys. The Bulldogs are led by Zach Williams, who is our pick for individual champion. A dark horse in the individual race could be Mt. Markham's Jordan Sirtoli. Sirtoli competed in the Empire State Games Steeplechase this summer as a freshman. Girls Varsity Large School Race This could be one of the most competitive races of the day. We have quality teams and individuals stacked against one another. Top local team favorite is a tie between Colonie (NE #9) and Burnt Hills. The BH girls ran well last weekend at Fonda and should again challenge for the Section 2 Class B title. Reigning Invy champion Meaghan Gregory (BH) will be tough to beat for the individual title again this year. Gregory was ninth at the NYS Federation meet last year as a freshmen and continues to grow as a runner. Gregory's top contender will be New Paltz's Natalie Busby. Busby is the reigning Section 9 Class B champion and a talented track star to boot! The New Paltz girls team could challenge for the team title. Other quality individuals include Bethlehem's Kristen Kenney, Monroe-Woodbury's Carmen Milian, Amsterdam's Krissy Welch, and Colonie's Kaitlin Mock. You can never count the M-W girls out of any race they enter! They are our dark horse. Boys Varsity Large School Race Reigning Invy champion Thousand Islands is back again from Canada. While little is known about their returning runners, it would be safe to say their chances of a repeat win are good. The leading local favorite is Burnt Hills. Chip Button's boys swept the first six spots at last weekend's Fonda Invitational and just defeated '05 NTN champion Saratoga in a dual meet on Tuesday. There is little doubt that Guilderland' Brian Rhodes-Devey will win his third straight Invitational title. What is going to be more interesting to watch is if the Footlocker qualifier can break his current course record of 13:58.3. BRD remains the only runner to ever break 14 minutes on the 2.7 mile course. Other quality individuals to watch in the chase pack include Burnt Hills' Drew Houghtalen, Monroe-Woodbury's Bryan Cassidy, and Kellenburg's Kasey Geller. Our Dark horse in the team chase is Guilderland who looked impressive in a dual meet on Tuesday. NOTE: Alyse Rocco is the lone entry from Canton, MA. She will be one to watch in which ever race she is placed in. Questions? Contact Coach Bob Oates at: moates@nycap.rr.com or 518-895-2635 |
